Worst polishes of 2012

While everybody else is out there praising their 2012  favourites, I decided to give you a random list of “worsts”! The main reason for this is that there are too many polishes I liked in 2012, and the other reason is that I enjoy being mean sometimes – and this will give me the perfect opportunity. You can disagree with me and let me know which polishes you didn’t like this year!

As a general info: Worst of 2012 refers to polishes I wore in 2012, not necessarily ones that were brought out in 2012. Let’s get started!

Pretty much everything from the Catrice Hidden World LE. brown, salmon and frosty white – no thank you!Catrice Hidden World_Wood You Follow Me

OPI Play the Peonies. Okay, so I liked Chanel Attraction, but this is also more pink. Frosty, white-ish pink. Brrr.OPI Play the Peonies (1)

Revlon Mint Gelato. Sheer dusty turquoise, unbearable smell (and I love mint!): overall performance could not convince (that was very diplomatic).Revlon Mint Gelato1

I like the idea of  NYX Precious Gems, but the execution lacks… skills? experience? love? ideas? Well, you pick.zoya marley_NYX precious gems1

Models Own Dusty Mauve - they name already gives this one away. Not much I can say or do that will make it cry harder.Models Own Dusty Mauve2

It pains me to say it, but Orly Artificial Sweetener only looks good in the bottle. I gave it chance after chance, but it just looks yuck on me. Even though it is pink!Orly Artificial Sweetener_unnamed franken2

essence Rebel Topcoat in Punk Royal  (and Catrice No smoke without fire): jelly black doesn’t work. AT ALL. Even if it has glitter in it. Ooooh I think these two might win the ugliest of ugly award.  Looks like black snot or slime over my nails! *shudders*essence rebel delight punk royal

OPI Gouda Gouda Two Shoes. This is not a decent or elegant version of brown, this is ugly. Same goes for Nubar Charmeuse -  just because Nubar makes it a bit more difficult to call this plain brown, it is freakishly boring (and ugly). And, a bit more mauve but still too brown for me: OPI Mauving to Manitoba. OPI Gouda Gouda Two Shoes

Glitter Gal Flawless Pink is everything but flawless. At least it’s holographic, but it’s definitely not flawless (and, to be honest, it’s not much pink either).glitter gal flawless pink1

MAC Style Clan - poop brown with orange glitter – it can’t get much worse. Oh, wait! Short nails make it look extra bad. I don’t even want to start telling you what I think this looks like.MAC Style Clan (3)

Jessica Glitterati - great idea, but such a failure. I pretty much hated how it looked like on the nail. The only thing left to say is, WHY?!OPI Just spotted the lizzard_Jessica Glitterati_2

GOSH Ocean. Eeeeuh. It’s too much of everything. Too many brush strokes, too much color, too much, just too much. GOSH Ocean (1)

Barielle Out-grey-geous. Can’t even deal with this after I stamped over it. It’s completely boring and unfitting, and then, why the many “-” in the name? Barielle Out-grey-geous_stampet wnw I need a refresh-mint (2)

I thought I’d never have complaints about yellow polish, but Nicole by OPI Yellow it’s me changed my mind. I tried it alone, over white, over yellow – the orange/red glow in it just ruins it for me, apart from it being so sheer. In the same area is essence peach beauty (fruity TE) – I mean come on, patchy, sheer orange? Hell no! There’s no excuse for sheer yellow nail polish. Polish makers of the world, unite, and fight against this nuisance! NOPI Yellow it's me (1)

The extra awards for horrible application go to Face of Australia Verdigris (bubbles in metallic, streaky military green) and Sinful Colors Cinderella (patchy shimmery light blue, impossible to make opaque without it looking as if it ran down your tips).face of australia verdigris (1)

I wish you all a great New Year’s Eve and a good start into the new year. Hope your hangovers won’t be too bad, and that you all have someone to kiss at midnight.

Your weekly dose of Holo: Glitter Gal Bronzed Aussie

Welcome to Your weekly dose of Holo! Today I have another Glitter Gal for you, called Bronzed Aussie. My friend B. let me swatch all of her Glitter Gals and this is one of the ones I thought about elegantly not returning, so I could keep it – but then this reasoning voice in my head came though (I hate it when it that happens – it means I’m turning into a reasonable adult) and told me that it doesn’t really fit me, and unfortunately, that’s the case. So I did return the Bronzed Aussie, and I will not comment on the name, I will not comment on the name….!

The color itself is somewhat between rose gold and very light bronze. I’m generally in love with all gold colors, so I guess that’s why I thought I could pull this one of. Application was just fine, 2 coats and reasonable drying time. The holographic glitter in this one seemed more sparse than in the other polishes (here and here) I tried so far from this Glitter Gal line.

What do you think about Bronzed Aussie?

Your weekly dose of Holo: Glitter Gal Flawless Pink

If you’d ask me, Glitter Gal Flawless Pink has only one big flaw: not being pink enough. To me it looks more like a washed out lavender, but hey! It’s holographic. The smaller flaw it has is that it stinks unless anything that I have smelled before. So, if you consider changing from a glue addiction to a nail polish addiction, here’s the heavy stuff*.

Anyhow. 2 coats Flawless *cough* Pink. above: sunlight, below: shade

*Just in case you didn’t catch that: I did not mean that seriously. You should stick to glue.**

** Again. Gotcha!

Your weekly dose of Holo: Glitter Gal Marine Blue

Aaaah how I am looking forward to my weekly holo dose. This time I’m showing you another Glitter Gal, Marine Blue, which is a dark blue holographic polish. I like the more scattered holographic effect because it adds this ‘unterwater’ touch to the polish. Under the sea, under the sea, …

Anyhow. Apply 2 coats of Marine Blue, add a bit of sunshine and enjoy!

The first picture was made in the shade, the other two in direct sunlight.

Yoour weekly dose of Holo: Glitter Gal High Voltage

Don’t you love it that finally the summer has arrived (at least here in Vienna) and the sun shines and the holographic polishes sparkle?!

Glitter Gal High Voltage is a deep aubergine (or eggplant, if you prefer) purple that contains immense amounts of holographic glitter. It’s less in your face holographic than the Layla Holos for example, but that makes it only more interesting. So far I really enjoyed wearing all the Glitter Gals I got to try!

2 coats and millions of pictures because it’s just too much fun to photograph something so pretty.

This is how it looks in the shade:

So. do we like or do we like??

How I wore it: Glitter Gal Type O

Before I forget: Have you entered one of my Giveaways yet? My Giveaway extravaganza is still open ONLY TODAY, and you can win absurdly much, thanks to some awesome nail polish makers who gifted some of the prizes. Oh and you can click any of the underlined words, as there are 7 Giveaways, and each link will take you to one of them.

Of all the Glitter Gals I tried, this one is hands down my favourite. The red looked really nice on me, and it wasn’t over the top linear holographic boom bam amazing in your face, but more subtle, which looked really nice on me.

I am contemplating ‘helping’ my friend moving house (the one who let me swatch her Glitter Gals) and then ‘loosing’ this colour somewhere along the way. Do you think she’d notice?

I used two coats of Glitter Gal Type O for this manicure. No topcoat or any additional artificial flavours!

And this is how it looks in the shadow (still awesome, no?!):

And this is what I paired it with: A short blue striped pullover from Monki, a regular pair of pants (no idea where from) and a white undershirt. Easy-peasy.

What do you think?

Welcome back to your weekly dose of Holo!

This Saturday I chose to show you Glitter Gal Bondi Blue, which is a baby blue holo, in the known Glitter Gal quality. I used two coats and had no application issues, especially no dragging, which I appreaciated a lot! The colour itself is very similar to other baby blue holos, so it’s nothing ground breaking new.

above: picture in indirect day light. Below: sun, obviously! :)

Soooo, you like?

Your weekly dose of Holo: Glitter Gal Bruised Ego

Glitter Gal Bruised Ego – a medium purple holographic polish for this week’s Saturday. Ok, bruised = purple, but why ego? Maybe I think too much about nail polish names…

2 coats of Bruised Ego give you one fine holographic manicure. I feel towards Purple as I feel towards chamber music. I accept its existance, but I’d rather not go anywhere near it. Nevertheless, the holographic effect is to me as if I had a Mojito in my hand (whenever I’d be in a chamber music situation). Enough about me, onto the pictures!

above: all in direct sunlight. ah, the beauty!
and below: a picture in daylight, but no direct sun – still quite amazing, isn’t it?

So, what do you think? Do we need more Glitter Gals?

Your weekly dose of Holo: Glitter Gal Code Red

Good morning on this fine Saturday! Don’t we all love weekends!

Today I’d like to show you a polish that I borrowed from my dear friend B., who is quite the holographic polishes fanatic/lover (<– whichever you prefer!). I’m talking about Glitter Gal Code Red.

Unfortunately for me, I fell in love with this polish – in sunlight it seems to be the perfect red holo, in indirect light it is a medium red with enough depth to go deep sea diving.

I used two coats of Glitter Gal Code Red, which is sufficient for full coverage, and it dries fairly quick. As it is a holo, no topcoat is needed! The only thing I’m not totally happy about is the Glitter Gal names;Ipersonally would have prefered a coherent naming of the whole collection. Nevertheless I’m happy for everyone who submitted a name that was picked, because those nifty boys and girls won quite some polishes!

So, are you jealous already of my great friends? :)
